NEW $1.6 MILLION FLAT COIL FORMING PROCESS
AT PENN COIL

Pennsylvania Electric Coil, Ltd., Glassport , PA , has installed a new $1.6 million automated electric form coil process. The installation at PennCoil, as the company is known, represents the first independent use of this advanced flat coil technology in the United States .

“The new equipment redefines AC form coil manufacturing, from 460V to 13.8kV, and adds significantly to PennCoil’s quality model,” according to Ken Roller, who heads The Monarch Group of which PennCoil is a part. “We view it as vital to PennCoil’s future to invest in equipment that electronically, efficiently and consistently produces --- with 100% repeatability --- coils built to precise specifications. PennCoil’s new automated flat coil manufacturing is one such process.” Volume and repeat orders, “even one set!” Roller added, will benefit from the new process in cost and delivery.

The system consists of two electronically-controlled station. One is for automated taping;the other for forming. Tests on medium and high voltage coils from this process are unparalleled. The results were garnered both in PennCoil’s new high voltage endurance lab and from an independent lab, according to Donald A. Dolence, the Group’s Vice President of Technology and Operations.

Taping is uniform with constant tension and electronically controlled overlap. Further, it's the fastest taping process in the industry, improving productivity while still improving quality. A powerful forming machine is the partner to the taping machine. After input of data, which can be stored and instantly input again, the machine forms the coil to the data, again with unerring consistency. Hand forming is eliminated. Standard loops and other flat coil are suitable with this process.

PennCoil, founded in 1917, is one of the oldest electric coil manufacturers in the country. It produces armature, stator including high voltage, field and speciality coils in a 73,000sf facility in the Greater Pittsburgh area.
