New 70,000sf Facility for
Monarch-Detroit Service Center

The Monarch-Detroit Service Center of The Monarch Group has nearly doubled its space in a move from Madison Heights, MI. to a new facility in Melvindale, MI.

The new 70,000sf Detroit area center, which services electrical motors and generators for manufacturing, refining, power and related industries, increases production capability by 50%, according to Monarch Group President Kenneth J. Roller. The firm additionally has added a full second shift for two-shift service Monday through Saturday.

“We were able to add larger equipment, including cranes, baking ovens and a 60” diameter VPI tank, as well as increase storage for inventorying new motors and our customers’ spare motors,” Roller said. The Detroit center now has a 30-ton lifting capacity and a baking capability up to 12’x12’x14’. The center handles AC testing to 6,900V and DC to 700V with 13kV available.

Another significant benefit, Roller added, is the creation of a specialized mill-duty motor section within the overall center. This will “result in faster turnaround for crucial production equipment which frequently involves emergency schedules, whether in-shop or at the customers’ site.”

Employment will increase at Monarch-Detroit during the next months, Roller said, by an estimated 15-20%, bringing the workforce to a total of 50 persons working the two shifts. “An increased demand for customer turnkey projects and computer-directed motor management programs continue to grow our business,” Roller commented. Motor management involves Monarch handling all facets of a customer’s motor maintenance, repair and replacement.

The new facility in Detroit joins The Monarch Group’s two other large service centers. The second is in Cleveland, and the third in the Pittsburgh area. The Group additionally includes as separate entities, PennCoil, a coil manufacturing company, and Cleveland Rebabbitting Service. The Monarch Group is considered the largest independent company in motor rewinding, repair, rebuilding and remanufacturing. The Group services a variety of markets, including safety-related nuclear equipment. It primarily serves the Continental North America. Its field crews, however, range far and wide on an international basis and the firm counts projects in 28 foreign countries in recent years.
